Many farmers used to act like they lived in poverty in the eyes of the IRS by buying deductible machinery and bragged loudly about not paying taxes. The downfall to that was they borrowed money to buy the machinery. Then the 80’s came and suddenly those farmers were in big money trouble, behind on loan payments on that machinery they purchased to avoid taxes. If those farmers were too far under water and had to sell out they suddenly owed a big income tax bill from selling the machinery that got them out of paying taxes. It doesn’t seem like I hear much of that bragging among farmers anymore. I’m a farmer too and I have taken advantage of farm related tax deductions every year but I have never purchased toys just to avoid income taxes nor will I ever.
