My Farmall C has about the same hp as your 40. It came with a 5 ft woods belly mower. I replaced it with a 6 ft woods. Sometimes I run it in second gear. Does a great job in first gear.
It really depends on how tough your grass is. You may find a 6 ft finish mower.
My jubilee has a woods rear mount 6 ft. I think it's a RM 660.
I like the 6 ft belly mower over the 6 ft rear mount. When you turn with a rear mount, there is always a strip of grass left behind. Not so with the belly mower.
Can you mount a belly mower on your JD? It's very easy to remove a 3 pt mower. No so with a belly mower. I leave mine on year around.
