This is not an issue with gas engines, and less of an issue with newer computer controlled diesels, so any comparision to a car doesn't really help.

A diesel tractor is built to pull & work hard, and best efficiency, power, and wear is achieved on a diesel tractor by loading it up to most of it's work load & runnig at near full rated rpm's. Runnig them too slowly, or worse, runnig slowly & lugging it, is not good.

Of course, a lot of diesels pull hayracks, siderakes, have loaders, etc. In those cases, obviosly you don't go barreling along full rpm's all the time.....

But if you get it out in the field doing real work, you are better off running about full rated rpm's with a diesel engine, and adjusting your speed with the tranny. Your implements should be matched up to about use most of your pull power at a speed that is comfortable to work at.
