I have been a heavy equipment master mechanic for over 40 years and I've cussed just about every piece of equipment built. Sorry to say that's an old wives tale. If you want to ensure shorting the life of your engine, not to mention drive train components do as your neighbor advises. A stationary engine is built to run wide open for extended periods of time, not tractor engines. A Detroit Diesel loves a full throttle others don't. A rule of thumb is, if the engine isn't lugging under a load then the throttle is properly set. There is no mystery under the hood, it's all just a pile of iron bolted togather, that demands proper lubrication and cooling, the rest will take care of itself.
