John,

There is a unique feature to Marvel Schebler carburetors that few people know about and I stumbled onto it years ago out of desperation because my Ford kept shutting down. It would idle all day, and would run at full speed for 10 15 minutes and then die. It would restart immediately, but would when running fast. If allowed to sit for a while, it would run great for another 10-15 minutes, then die.

First, when it shuts down, make sure that it is still getting spark to the plugs and gas to the carburetor.

If yes to both, then look at this:

Remove the fuel line at the carburetor and there should be good flow running out. You should get about a quart to a half gallon in about a minute if allowed to run into a container. If not, find out why not. If so, then reconnect the fuel line to the carburetor.

Next remove the plug from the bottom of the the fuel bowl. The gas in the bowl will rush out and then there should be a steady flow, but less than from the fuel line because the fuel has to flow throgh the float/needle assembly.

If the fuel slows to a trickle go back and remove the fuel line from the inlet of the carburetor and then remove the inlet fitting from the carburetor. On the inlet fitting you will most likely find a clogged wire mesh screen.

Clean the screen, reconnect the fitting and fuel line. Start the engine and be on your way.

This problem perplexed me for several months many years ago until I stumbled across that little screen in the carburetor.

Add a filter at the outlet of the fuel tank, if there is not one present.

Let us know how it turns out.

The saga starts with the following message: Hey guys I have a decision to make. I know what you all will probably suggest and it will probably agree with me way down inside, but here it is. I have a picture blown up and framed in my "tractor room" of a Farmall M. It was my Grandpa's tractor, of which whom I never got to meet. He froze to death getting this tractor out of the barn to pull a truck out of the ditch before I was born. Anyway my dad and aunt had to sell it at the auction, ... [Read Article]
