Once again you're right. I also learned recently that a short piece of insulation, the kind that is formed into a tube, that is used on water lines works good when the ladder needs to extend past the point of contact. I just snap it onto the bottom of the ladder where it leans against the "gutter" and it doesn't scratch the paint. Slide it up and down to get it the correct height. It also aids in slipping sideways if you didn't take the time to get it quite "upright."
