That applies to "some" alternators. I didn't need the diode for my application that used a "rice-ernator" but I was prepared to put one in if needed. Eric, I have been an electronics technician for about 17 of my 29 year career. I about cringed to the bone when you explained about the "white line" thing. It's called the cathode and when it sees an electromotive potential that is more negative than the electromotive potential of the anode, the silicone junction of the device will be biased for conduction of curent flow. Yeah, right! Just put the white line thingy towards the alternator, like you said in the first place.
