First, let's assume that the points, condensor, etc. are all installed properly and the mag is timed correctly. There are articles in the archives on timing magnetos. If you had the mag out, you might be totally out of time, or even experienced mechanics can get it easily 180 degrees out thinking that it's correct. Backfiring would indicate that you might have a timing problem. When you replaced the plug wires, did you use the older type "metal strand" wires? If you used the newer type (carbon/silicon or whatever it is that they use), then chances are you aren't getting enough fire through those to give a good spark. I've been told that the old electrical systems do not function with enough voltage to work properly with the new wires. If you're making up a new set of metallic wires, make sure you solder the brass connections.
