It depends on the material from which the gaskets are made. The manufacturer or place where you bought them can tell you for sure. Generally, rubber or neoprene gaskets don't use sealer. Here's a tip. For oil pan and valve cover gaskets, I use a very small amount of Hi-tack (gasket cement) to hold the gasket on the pan/cover. Then smear oil over the gaskets surface where the gasket meets the block/head. Then install. The advantage is that I never have to scrape gasket material off the block/head upon removal and the gasket rarely tears. It almost always comes off in such good shape I can resue it. I suspect this won't work with cork gaskets but I don't know because I refuse to use them. This trick works with differential cover and transmission pan gaskets as well. Just use the same oil that you will use when refilling the particular unit.

As most restorers, I have a number of war stories I can relate on a range of topics that may help other like minded and interested people. Perhaps my first p
