About 20-30 years ago or thereabouts, the local school boards started shutting down high school's (grades 10-12) vocational/trades/shop programs. Everyone was going to be an intellectual of course, lots of brain surgeons and rocket scientists.. Now those trades people are in demand, and while a good number of those same schools have gone back (at least a bit) and post-secondary trade schools have good enrollments, it is difficult for a generation of kids who have sat behind a computer desk for their whole life to think of work as being anything but that sort of thing. There are still trades that require a lot of physical work and a good number of today's students fear that sort of workday.
