We've had despots since the time of Abraham. Our Constitutional Republic was a mad foray into the unknown. People actually ruling themselves? a crazy quaint notion. Republican government has mostly failed. Wiemar Germany collapsed. France has devolved into socialism. The idea of self rule isn't the problem though, it is that people can vote themselves largess from the public coffers with little or no push back. Power corrupts. Why does a country's leader need to amass a personal fortune when the whole nation is at his beck and call? Yet it happens under every despot and too many of our leaders. Obama made millions while in office. The Clintons left office "Broke" but amassed millions immediately thereafter. President Trump will be the rare leader in that he is losing millions by being in office. No book deals, he already wrote the book on how to do this stuff.
