Unless it's changed since the 80's, she'll see soldiers in uniform, as well as soldiers out of uniform, both male and female, carrying rifles everywhere. Israel is pretty much in a constant state of war, and pretty much everyone, male and female, serve a term in the military. They also provide security in many places, thus their presents seemingly everywhere. You can read up on the IDF at Wikipedia. One thing we were told, was to watch them hitch hiking. A soldier standing beside the road, with their rifle pointed out, and down, was akin to our idea of thumbing a ride. True, or not, I don't know, but we saw many of them do it when we were there back in '87. There are some beautiful, and historic sites.
