Doing government work this week.

My customer has been upgrading some of the older electronic governors and pneumatic valves with electronic ones for fuel gas flow control. It has been a battle, always has on the first time with a device, but we are getting them licked. We are on the second engine of 5, only took 3 days to get 1 1/2 done. It is amazing to see the 30 year old circuit boards compared to the new ones that fit in palm of your hand.

These are 2000 HP Ingersoll Rand 6 cylinder natural gas engines.

This is my last run of work for the pipeline companies, next month I am headed for Scotland and Israel for different customer.

@Ron, One of the vendors I was working with in Waterloo this week is headed up to your place, I guess the gearbox is out on the electric unit that supplies the refinery, I am not sure on the backups for that one. I think that is a 4000 HP motor, so a lot of torque on that gearbox.

A member of my wife's book club is going to Israel next month. Some church group I guess. Her tour guide told her to expect to see soldiers with guns on every street corner. What's that all about?

Unless it's changed since the 80's, she'll see soldiers in uniform, as well as soldiers out of uniform, both male and female, carrying rifles everywhere. Israel is pretty much in a constant state of war, and pretty much everyone, male and female, serve a term in the military. They also provide security in many places, thus their presents seemingly everywhere.
You can read up on the IDF at Wikipedia. One thing we were told, was to watch them hitch hiking. A soldier standing beside the road, with their rifle pointed out, and down, was akin to our idea of thumbing a ride. True, or not, I don't know, but we saw many of them do it when we were there back in '87.
There are some beautiful, and historic sites. I don't know how many are accessible given the political climate, but it's an interesting place to visit none the less. Good luck, and Godspeed, to your wife and the group. I hope they have a wonderful time.

It's called a high terror threat. Not unusual for that area of the world. And not everything there is a car bomb. There it can be someone who got in with an AK47. Gotta remember, religious zealots not matter the religion believe that they get to go to heaven it they die carrying out the makers will even if it involves suicide. So they are very willing to die for the cause. So wearing a bomb or walking into a crowd with a gun is no difference to them.
