Well, before you cast judgement, take a moment to consider that that may be you some day. Advanced in years, long beyond your ability to work with, or work on tractors, let alone climb up on the roof of a barn. That's your life's work sitting out there. Those machines. Could you really bring yourself to sell them, considering how little they're worth, even if the barn is falling in on them?
After the old farmer passes on, his widow is usually less inclined to maintain the outbuildings, and too overwhelmed to even think about trying to deal with the equipment, so it lingers. Sometimes you get a gal that wants to pull up stakes and move to Florida before the body is even cold, other times it's tough to let go.
This is probably one of those cases where the old folks who own the place, or maybe even their kids, are having a tough time letting go. You'll just have to wait until they're ready before you can get your paws on those old machines.
