Thanks to everyone for your excellent suggestions! :D I see right off the bat that I need to ground the VR. It had been mounted to a valve cover stud (!!!) and I moved it to the side panel brace, but I mounted it through the rubber insulated pad, so I don't think it's grounded. I'll check that. And I will try jumping the field stud to ground too. I'll have to check the ammeter as I can't recall if it shows a discharge. I've been ignoring it for that long! :oops:
