Something else to consider. If someone owes you money and you let them do some work for you on your property to pay you back, that's called payment in kind. Same as if you hired them to work for you.
Here is an example Tenant owes landlord rent. Tenant says I'll paint your house for two month's rent. Tenant falls off ladder and injures back. Landlords is screwed, no workman's comp.
I know another case where a person hires an inexperienced employee who got hurt while operating a tractor. Not only did he damage the tractor, the employer got a lesson, workman's comp.
