Talk to your agent. He's going to know more about insurance requirements in your state.

You need worker compensation insurance. It varies from state to state on who sells it. Here in Iowa you buy it from a private insurance company but the rates and rules are spelled out by state and federal law. The premium is based on a percentage of wage here. For a couple of part time season farm workers the policy usually is a set fee of like $50-100. IRC you used to have to have wages totally over $1000 to pay more than the set fee. Mine never was over the minimum until we started hiring full time employees.

Here is some thing to think about. In most states an employee is covered under the states rules even if the employer does not carry a policy. If the worker is injured their care would be covered just like their employer had the coverage. Then the state goes after the employer for the FULL cost of treatment not just the premium that it would have cost.

Probably a good idea, accidents can happen and we live in a law suit happy world. Anyone that works here after I explain what they need to know to be safe I say ?We have workers comp but you don?t work safe it?s still gunna hurt!?

Agree with JD Seller on the workman's compensation, but also talk to your agent about a umbrella for your farm if you don't already have one.

Something else to consider. If someone owes you money and you let them do some work for you on your property to pay you back, that's called payment in kind. Same as if you hired them to work for you.

Here is an example
Tenant owes landlord rent.
Tenant says I'll paint your house for two month's rent.
Tenant falls off ladder and injures back.
Landlords is screwed, no workman's comp.

I know another case where a person hires an inexperienced employee who got hurt while operating a tractor. Not only did he damage the tractor, the employer got a lesson, workman's comp.

I'll never hire kids. I'll hire a contractor instead.

Good think you are thinking about insurance before hiring anyone.

I used to purchase farm insurance. It covered if someone got hurt or if tractor was damaged, about $600 a year.

I agree with everything George and JS Seller have said. I have insurance here in Virginia, it's not too expensive. One more thing to consider if someone walks onto your place with or without your permission and get hurt (puts their foot in a gopher hole) they can sue you and you pay. Do you have your place posted--no hunters? Can you really prevent it? Does the dummy slip and fall? You pay the posting doesn't prevent being sued.
This happens in town but the amount of ground is smaller and more easily controlled. If someone happens to slip on your icy sidewalk you also get sued.

Great World we live in!!

A lot of us are probably guilty of assuming that our home owners or farm insurance covers stuff that might not be covered. Obviously, check with your agent and get his reply in writing, etc. Even if he makes a mistake in his information, those agents are insured for giving out erroneous information to clients. Better safe than sorry is the way to go.

Another option if you are not too far from civilization is to hire through a temp agency. Even if you have the employees already lined up, the agency takes care of the insurance, taxes etc.

Iowa has a minimum number of employees before worker comp kicks in, I think 3.

I would just pay them cash and make sure my liability insurance is up to snuff.

It?s my nephew but the way the world Is I thought I?d ask the yt department of facts and figures what they thought because I know guys here have a lot of experience with different things like this
