We had very similar issues with an old Nissan van we owned... Turned out to need a new ignition switch.
Found out for sure when I backed it out of the garage one day. It was running fine... then made a loud click, and it died. Tried to restart it... absolutely nothing, nadda, zippo.
Thankfully I had paused there to add a couple items to my shopping list - so at least it happened at home, not out on the road or while in town.
