Your foreman is correct in that hydrostatic pumps are designed to be run at full engine rpm. Scoring the pump and motor comes from either low oil (air in the system) or dirt. Low engine rpm will tend to overheat the oil as well as the engine. You didn't mention the model of the Bobcat, newer ones are less touchy than the old ones were. Most of the problem is in learning the feel of the machine. This is assuming that all the linkages are in good shape, loose joints will cause handling problems.
