If I remember correctly B was used as a general purpose vehicle designation. Such as cars and trucks. So it was most likely used for mowing. A lot of the vehicles used in support of aircraft operations had a L designation.
This was also while I was in the service from 1976 to 1996. What the designations were before or after were up to who ever the General was that was in charge at the time though.
I do not believe it changed much though, they probably just added different letters for different vehicle purposes.
