Military equipment numbers

So I?ve got a Minneapolis moline RTI-M that came from an Air Force base. At some point it got painted a red like primer color over the prairie gold. I talked to a buddy of mine that was in the Air Force about the numbers on the side of the equipment. He said about where the numbers were and what I should be looking for. So I wet sanded the side of the hood and sure enough there they were. As he said there was 2 numbers 1 letter and then a series of more numbers. The first two numbers designates the year. The letter designates what it was used for. Then the last set of numbers was the number of units bought that year. What I would like to know if somebody knows what the letters mean? My buddy couldn?t remember what they were designated for. Mine has the letter B on the hood. Thanks for looking!

Isn’t there a brass data plate somewhere? A lot of military equipment had that tag. It could have been removed sometime in its past life.

Yes there is brass tags but the one with the most info on it is
missing. I have seen others with the tags but it still don?t
designate what it was used for.

If I remember correctly B was used as a general purpose vehicle designation. Such as cars and trucks. So it was most likely used for mowing. A lot of the vehicles used in support of aircraft operations had a L designation.

This was also while I was in the service from 1976 to 1996. What the designations were before or after were up to who ever the General was that was in charge at the time though.

I do not believe it changed much though, they probably just added different letters for different vehicle purposes.
