Have you checked the thread pitch? I believe that's 1/4" or 3/8", either way, BPT is 19 thread per inch, NPT is 18 thread per inch. That is the first thing to determine. If it is 18 pitch, possibly it just wasn't tapped deep enough or it heat warped during installation. In that case it could be retapped.
If it is BPT, trying to tap it will most likely result in an ongoing leak. You can probably get the NPT fitting to screw in, but it won't be right.
The options are to find or make an adapter, or drill out the original fitting and weld in a NPT fitting.
