Sometimes I'm suspect they know they are lying, other times I think it might be an honest mistake.
When I was looking at mini-excavators, I checked one out that was listed as having ~3600 hours. When I inspected it that's what was on the display when you turned on the key. The display was set to show a job hours meter that can be reset. With the push of a few buttons on the display panel then the total hours display came up showing ~6800. I notified one of the auction staff who muttered some choice words about the check-in guys not knowing their a$$ from a hole in the ground and he headed for the office. Sure enough the auctioneer announced to the crowd before bidding started on it that the hours noted in the catalog were in error and that the correct hours were ~6800. Probably cost the seller about $4000-$6000 in reduced bidding because of the higher hours.
