misrepresenting auctioneer

I bought a baler today. The auctioneer claimed it had 4000 bales through it. When I paid for it and got the monitor in the office, it had a tag tied to it that said 9600 bales. I went straight back out and confronted the auctioneer about his misrepresentation. He basically said sorry, tough luck, and if I don't want it anymore, I can refuse it and leave it there. I found the owner, which was a dealer dumping a trade-in, and asked him about it, he offered to give me $1000 off the price, and I took it.

This same auctioneer sold a Bish adapter off a Gleaner M2 to me a couple months ago. When I went to remove it, it was WELDED on! Seller was annoyed because he had to cut it off for me. He had stepped out of the truck for a minute when the Gleaner happened to be sold, otherwise he would have the the auctioneer NOT to sell the adapter separate.

I know auctioneers are supposed to talk up the item and whip the crowd into a buying frenzy, but why do they gotta be such constant liars? "Super rare item!" "hard to come by!" "only lightly used on a small farm!" "Folks, when are you going to get another chance to buy an item like this?" "Absolutely nothing wrong with it!" "Only 4000 bales!"

...And the baler was "only" used on Sundays. *lol*

I believe I'd be steering clear of any more auctions from that company.

Makes you consider filming everything the auctioneer say when you consider buying a specific piece of machinery. At least you would have proof he lied. Tough world less and less honest people

Had an Amish Auctioneer at a horse sale once say he "knew every horse personally". Kinda hard to believe when there were about 300 horses there, the auction was in Missouri, and there were horses from NY, MO, MI, PA, OH, IA, KS, NE, and more......Some came in DURING the sale.
Also went to another auction where they were selling Buggies and wagons. It was comical - the auctioneer reminded me of a used car salesman....

Sometimes I'm suspect they know they are lying, other times I think it might be an honest mistake.

When I was looking at mini-excavators, I checked one out that was listed as having ~3600 hours. When I inspected it that's what was on the display when you turned on the key. The display was set to show a job hours meter that can be reset. With the push of a few buttons on the display panel then the total hours display came up showing ~6800. I notified one of the auction staff who muttered some choice words about the check-in guys not knowing their a$$ from a hole in the ground and he headed for the office. Sure enough the auctioneer announced to the crowd before bidding started on it that the hours noted in the catalog were in error and that the correct hours were ~6800. Probably cost the seller about $4000-$6000 in reduced bidding because of the higher hours.

I had a totally different story about an auction the auctioneer stopped the auction and asked if the owner of a
certain tractor was in the crowd, He then went on to tell that the guy that just bought the tractor found out
from someone when he was getting ready to load the tractor it had transmission issues and the owner did not
disclose it well long story short the auctioneer said he did not run auctions like that and the owner had his
tractor back and would not be consigning any more equipment at his auctions again. I have total respect for a man
that runs an auction this way and never miss his consignment auctions. Just like any other business they are not
all crooked there are good ones out there. John

natural born liars they flap their jaws like crazy and they get paid to do it i too have been burnt by them haven't participated in an auction in decades.....

Sounds like the seller AND the auctioneer knew they were trying to pull a fast one.

Was at a consignment auction a couple of years ago. Auctioneer stopped the auction when the seller said he had a reserve on an item. Auctioneer said I don't do that! You can pay me based on your reserve and take your item home.

Hate to say it but you are to blame. You
must inspect item and verify all issues.
Next if you have issues with auctioneer why
did you go back? Looks to me like they made
it right by lowering the price or offering
to cancel the sale but you still complain.

I went to a sale barn to buy a herd bull. Found one. When he came through the chute I responded. Auctioneer would look at me for a hit and look up in
the stands to my right and immediately get a hit and come back to me. When he passed what I wanted to give for the animal I quit bidding. The
auctioneer did his up to the other bidder, got the bid came back to me and........

Screech!!!!! All of a sudden the auction stopped. He asked me if I was going to bid, I said no. A dialogue commenced and it was apparent that there
was no second bidder...he was just bidding me up. I told him I would give him what I last bid and that was that. I took the bull home.

The complaint is the auctioneer pulling a number out his butt and misrepresenting and item he’s selling. If he didn’t know the bales, why give a number? I guess I coulda walked up and checked the monitor in the office, but I was going after a different cheaper baler and I really didn’t expect to buy such a new one. He didn’t make it right, he barely apologized. The owner of the dealership made it right. Id guess he’s gonna pay commission on what I paid and still give me a grand back. It isn’t gonna hurt him any. In our discussion, he said that he does 30 million in sales a year...

around here the odds of getting ripped of (and i mean RIPPED off) by the Amish (auctioneer or not) is very high.

Yes, You COULD get a bad deal or ripped off by anyone. but my experience is with the amish you WILL get ripped off. I Try very hard to avoid doing any business with them. Especially the amish auctioneers but they are getting prolific buying up non-amish auction companies.

latest scam is "silent bid" real estate auctions. you have NO idea who is bidding, what the bid is, they will call you if you are "outbid" to encourage you to bid higher. you could also be the high bidder and may not get it if one of their amish buddies is interested at a lower price. I imagine if you dug into it and watched long enough you could find enough to turn them into the auction commission or the real estate agency.

Yea he was pretty dumb to give an exact number most auctioneers would have just said 'used very little' or 'hardly baled much hay' which could mean about anything.I have always wondered if
someone would come back on one of these auctioneers that say a tractor is 'knee deep in rubber' when its really only ankle deep(LOL)

That is no different than what every banker in every town does when they foreclose on a property.
They all have favored buyers that they are in cahoots with and they get the "deals".
Not you or me or John Q. Public.

Around here, the Amish are the most honest, upstanding individuals I've ever met! It's the ENGLISH you have to watch VERY close....Best neighbors we've ever had - and that's including some RELATIVES. Help them and they help you. Just had two of the local boys come over and stack firewood last night. All the "pay" they would take was a bag of M&M's. Most people don't take the time to get to know the Amish, and form opinions without much information. Out of the 2,000-3,000 Amish I have known in several states (and a foreign country), I can count on one hand those I did not trust. I can't say that about the English.

Numbers often get "manipulated." Not an auction, but I knew a gun dealer who often had guns that were "one of 500" or "one of 1,000" or "only made for two years." I looked into some of those "scarce" guns and could find nothing to support his sales pitch. It seems no profession has an exclusive franchise on scamming customers.

We have 1 auctioneer here that used to do that. He is no longer in business here. Another 6 or 7 that are as
honest as the day is long.
