A few days ago someone ask if there was still discrimination in the United States. Well today the Louisiana legislators voted to allow the public to vote this November to remove a Jim Crow law from our books that was made law in 1880 during reconstruction.
This law allows a guilty verdict with only 10 of the 12 people on a jury voting guilty. It also allows a not guilty vote with 10 of the 12. It applies to all criminal cases except capitol cases like murder.
The law was put into force to make it easier to convict blacks and free whites. One other state has this law. Oregon. They were talking about it on the news today and said Portland got the law in Oregon to try and keep blacks out.
So yes there is still discrimination in the deep south. Even in our courts.
