Today is the anniversary of the US naval intelligence service's decrypting the message that Admiral Yamamoto would be flying in to Bouganville on an inspection tour. It set in motion the plan to shoot down his plane as he arrived 4 days later. The Navy didn't have a plane with the range to pull it off so they handed the job to the Army whose P-38s did have the range. In a great example of interservice cooperation - which was rare in those days - it was a Navy op pulled off by the Army. Chalk one up for the home team!
