Today is the anniversary of the US naval intelligence service's decrypting the message that Admiral Yamamoto would be flying in to Bouganville on an inspection tour.
It set in motion the plan to shoot down his plane as he arrived 4 days later.
The Navy didn't have a plane with the range to pull it off so they handed the job to the Army whose P-38s did have the range.
In a great example of interservice cooperation - which was rare in those days - it was a Navy op pulled off by the Army.
Chalk one up for the home team!

Another very interesting WW2 post! When I was remodeling my house in Bay City, MI in the '80's, I found some WW2 era newspapers wrapped around some pipes under a bathroom I was moving. One of them had an account of a labor strike at some war material plants! I had never heard or read of such a thing before! Like the disagreement between the pilots arguing who shot Yamamoto down, I always felt there was only total agreement during WW2. Thanks, again, Dawg!

Yamamoto, was one that knew the strength of The United States. Great post, I enjoy them

Great read!

"Marine Corps Major John Condon" sounds rather familiar. He may have still been around the Corps when I was in, probably a General by then.

A recently published book, "Code Girls" by Liza Mundy, details the lives and times of the women - thousands of them - who worked to successfully break the Japanese military code. The profound secrecy they all worked in and the necessity to make many events throughout the war, like Operation Vengeance and Midway, look like coincidences is covered in detail. It's a fascinating, well written story of WWII that is generally unknown. The women knew they were directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of the enemy. There were mixed emotions, but generally they were glad for it.
