: My MF65 ('58) has a leaky gas tank that I havn't got around to fixing yet. : As a result, I've only been putting in about a half gallon of gas at a time when I run it. : The tractor idles great, but stalls out a lot with any sort of load on it. I'm wondering if this could be due to water in the gas (condensation in the empty tank, etc.) : Does this sound likely, or do you think it is something worse? If it is water, am I risking any damage when it bucks and stalls out? : Thanks! If I get the gas down to under half a gallon in my MF-135 it only runs on certain slopes or level and not on others. But sounds more like your gas tank rust has migrated to the filter, the fuel line, and the carburetor inlet screen, maybe the carburetor passages and jets too, so that the fuel only gets to the carburetor fast enough to support idling. You can check the system except for the run passages in the carburetor by removing the drain plug on the bottom of the carburetor and seeing how much fuel flows after the float chamber is emptied. I think you will find a very tiny dribble. I saw a carburetor inlet screen on a neighbor's JD2020 this summer that wouldn't pass air at 60 psi. It had exactly those symptoms, idled but wouldn't keep running. On my MF-135 I had a capacitor in the distributor go bad and it gave a weak yellow spark that made the engine run very badly. I forced it anyway and cracked the exhaust manifold. So if it was my tractor, I'd replace the capacitor (condensor) and set the point gap, replace the plugs, set the timing AND clean out the fuel plumbing and get some antique car gas tank sealer and fix the tank leaks. Water could be a problem too. Gerald
