: I need advice on what to look for in buying a trailer to haul a small tractor (27 hp about 3500 lbs with front end loader). This is what I've learned so far: About 16ft. long, tandem axle with electric brakes, 7000 lb. GVWR, will need a heavy duty frame mounted hitch like used for travel trailers, price may go as high as $2300 but I'd like to get it for less. I've also been warned about damaging the trailer during loading by concentrating weight on the tail end. Any comments will be appreciated.

the lenth of the trailer and the location of the axles is important. i normally drive the tractor on and put the front of the tractors rear rim above the center of the front tractor axle but since you have a loader the tractor may have to be moved back a few inches so check the dimmension from the front of the loader to the front of the rear rim if this dimmension is 10 foot then your front axle should be 10 foot or more back from the front of the bed of the trailer. generally a standard trailer has the front axle dead center of the bed of the trailer so you might want to consider having your trailer custom built to your specks. as far as axles go for some reason probally $$$ the manufacturers are using srtaight axles instead of cambered or bowed. this is a problem because if your axle is straight then your tires will be standing straight up and down while the trailer is empty like this (l-l) but when your loaded they are like this (/-\) this causes alot of wear on your tires. a camberd or bowed axle is like this empty (\-/) but when it is loaded they are like this (l-l) thats a heck of alot better on your tires. i would look for a trailer that is made out of 3 x 5 angle iron and a wrap around tounge that goes all the way back to the front of the front spring hanger. GOOD LUCK.

Today's Featured Article - Tractor Hydraulics - The Basics - by Curtis Von Fange. Hydraulics was one of the greatest inventions for helping man compound the work he can do. It’s amazing how a little floor jack can lift tons and tons of weight with just the flick of a handle. What’s even more amazing is that all the principals of hydraulic theory can be wrapped up in such a small package. This same package applies to any hydraulic system from the largest bulldozer to the oldest and smallest tractor. This short series will take a look at the basic layout of a simple hydraul ...
