The founding ideal of our nation was that every man from 16 to 60 was to be a part of the military in the form of a militia. Prior to the civil war we had a very small standing army. It was mostly what was needed to defend the frontier and ports. At the start of WW1 we had a very small army, and again at the beginning of WW2. the problem was we no longer had a competent militia that could be called up to defend the nation. We have not truly been at peace ever. We have had many minor scrapes and brush wars, and most people are oblivious to them. Our second amendment was written for two purposes, one that every man be ready to answer the call in time of national need, and to provide a force to keep dirty politicians somewhat honest.
