I forgot another thing, batteries do not accept charge very fast when cold, especially with near freezing and below freezing temps. Vehicles that get moved around a lot or see short trips in the cold of winter might not be getting their batteries charged up real well because of this.
Some vehicles that have PCM or module controlled charging systems actually monitor battery temperature or maybe ambient air temperature to help control the charging system.
