The one extra game they will play next week (the games yesterday were bowl games that they would have had anyway) is probably about as much as they can get away with for a playoff system in football, because of the physical demands of each game (they have to rest up and heal for a week between games), and the very real possibility of a career ending injury on every play. Can you imagine a 64 team playoff like in basketball? The eventual winner would play 6 post season games, almost another half season, and it would take until March. Neither the coaches nor the players would stand for anything more than the present setup, especially since the players aren't getting paid for each extra game like the pros do. Several players bound for the NFL even skipped their bowl game, not wanting to risk an injury until they've signed their name on a pro contract. I think the present system is about as good as it's going to get.
