Drilling your hole won't be difficult using a drill press. However, a handheld drill will require the use of a v-block jig. This could be something store bought or homemade. Have seen them made from a piece of 2x4, and from both steel and aluminum using angle. The angle holds your shaft in position for drilling. Is MUCH more accurate than trying to go it freehand. Here's an aluminum one that is on Amazon:
Another trick is to take 2 pieces of wood (1x2's maybe?) and clamp the shaft between them using C-clamps. This will help prevent the piece from rotating while trying to get started.
