Stan, I don't know about the show either, but moonshine is real. I don't live too far from Franklin county Va where a lot of the show is filmed. I have been there many times. We used to race at a little oval track there. Getting a gallon or two is no problem if you know the right people. Moonshining in Appalachia is a way of life and has been for many years. My understanding is you have to get caught in the act or have it in your possession to be prosecuted. What you see on TV may be water, not moonshine at all. If you run water through a still,all you get is distilled water. No crime there. It is not a crime to own a still.
