I can't believe this show is for real. With all the drowns flying around, I am sure most sheriff departments have them. Then to be televised. I don't watch the show, but was flipping the channels this morning waiting for it to warm up to at least low 60's (California guy) My Uncle made a little wine back in the day. I am sure some of your kin did the same. Maybe you still do. Finally warmed up, time to get to work on my mower for next season. Stan

I don't watch tv, but is it possible they have the permits to it? I think they are free or close to free to get.

Used to be a good many moonshiners here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mts,I watched the show a couple times pretty much fantasy. These days the operations have moved inside use propane to boil off the mash so they can keep the temperature just right and cooling coils run thru something refrigerated,no smoke for the revenuers to watch for.

Stan, I don't know about the show either, but moonshine is real. I don't live too far from Franklin county Va where a lot of the show is filmed. I have been there many times. We used to race at a little oval track there. Getting a gallon or two is no problem if you know the right people. Moonshining in Appalachia is a way of life and has been for many years. My understanding is you have to get caught in the act or have it in your possession to be prosecuted. What you see on TV may be water, not moonshine at all. If you run water through a still, all you get is distilled water. No crime there. It is not a crime to own a still.

Show is BS as like you said with drones who can hide that show is a joke like the Alaska ones. Just seen Azz here in Iowa at the Casino doing a Christmas show a week ago so much for spending his time in Alaska during winter.

The last I heard it is a crime to own a still. A long time ago a family member(I won't say how related) made a minature still for a science project in high school and the feds took it. I saw the newspaper clippings about the incident.

I'm thinking they are not making real shine. Why would you incriminate yourself on camera. Wine making is legal distilling is not legal. I also notice on the show Street Outlaws the cops never come when they race so I think they are on rented private property and they have light towers set up.

The Somerset Steam and Gas Show had to get a state license to own the still they run water thru during the show as an educational exhibit, don't think a private individual can get one.
State ABC guy is a member of the club so I don't think they'll do more than water(LOL)

I make moonshine and they often find me even though I move from barn to barn. They don't find me with drones though and never have. My stills are always in the barn and after I've sampled, sampled, and sampled I sometimes end up on the roof firing guns into the air that draw attention to my locations. It's not that I mean to, but after sampling, sampling, sampling good shine, I sometimes get carried away. The Sheriff deputies get wind of me being up on the roof firing guns into the air, they come over and yell up to me, "Old man put your clothes back on and climb down from there or we'll taze you like the last time". Let me tell you, if you've ever been tazed down from a barn roof it is painful, you generally get cut and bruised, the deputies go into the barn to get towels to wipe me off with and then find the stills. They could make a show about me and call it "How Not To Shine". Grin

My 15 year old ask for the airlocks for his birthday to make wine from all the peaches we had going bad. We have about 9 bottle of peach wine in the basement "aging".

They even sell the kits on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Distiller-Moonshine-Alcohol-Stainless-Thumper/dp/B00XZ381F0/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1513897002&sr=8-7&keywords=homemade+wine+kit

In Kansas you can own a still but you have to buy a permit to actually distill alcohol for personal use. Producing it to sell is another set of laws. Kansas requires no permit to produce alcohol by fermentation (wine & beer) - again only for personal use.

Chief, since so many of us have to go out when it is 10 degrees, I think that you should walk past the TV and go on out when it is 50 degrees so that you are not exposed to this criminal activity.

Stan, I think you are right, nothing real about that show.

There are several of them, Moonshiners, Outlaw Racers, Oak Island, Ancient Aliens, various Bigfoot shows, probably more I can't think of...

My opinion, those shows are not about bringing anything real to reality TV, they are strictly for entertaining those who are prone to read The Enquirer, and making money for the stockholders.

Then there are some loosely based on reality, but heavily staged and scripted, like the Bush People, Mountain Men, Bearing Sea Gold, American Pickers, Pawn Stars...

Then there are the "working class" shows, Gold Rush, Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers. Those have their share of scripted drama, but are more based on day to day on the job routine. I quickly find them quite boring, especially the language!

Some of my favorites are Forged In Fire, Naked and Afraid, Dirty Jobs (canceled), Myth Busters (canceled), and Cash Cab (just renewed). Not saying they are real, just more entertaining.

As for presenting anything truthful, just watch any show based on the Bible. The script is already written, just act it out. How difficult can that be? Evidently it is difficult enough they can never even come close to getting it right!

The show is scripted and fake. Tim was the local volunteer fire chief 5 miles from my house. The closet thing to illegal done was Tickle got caught with drugs and an illegal length sawed off shotgun.

Myth Busters, with the new guys currently runs on the Science Channel on Wednesday night. It's still the same show but with new guys. I miss the others but these guys aren't too bad. And the old shows still run from time to time.

To me it is just entertainment. You can learn some things watching most reality TV. It is a form of entertainment that is all. After all Braney was not a real deputy either. Jed Clampet did not find oil while rabbit hunting.

Distilling is perfectly legal. It would be a severe overreach to try to regulate that. What is not legal is selling the product without proper licence or the ability of the gov to tax your product. A still isn't a bad thing you just have to make sure you don't sell your product. Personally I would recommended getting one and using it to make fuel for your tractor. A wise man doesn't consume flammable liquid lol.that said sometimes I guess I'm just not wise. lol.

I live in Franklin County, VA, where parts of the show are filmed. Went to school with Blind Rodney Brown who was on one of the latest shows. Amos Law is a genuine former moonshine kingpin, the money man behind numerous operations. Henry Law, his son, was depicted on a recent show as a moonshiler, but he is a former moonshiner (Amos Law's son) and he recently started a legal distillery here in the county. Cecil Love is a former moonhiner who got busted a few years ago making a last run for some friends. Tim Smith is from neighboring Pittsylvania county.

As for the making of moonshine shown on the show, it's not real liquor being produced. All a show for the cameras. But the people are real.

I'm home brewing and the wife is whining. We do home brew. Can't recall off the top of my head just how much you can legally make per adult in a home but it's enough for us. Can't see how they can really enforce that limit either......the evidence got flushed! Last I knew there was nothing illegal in owning a still either.....provided you were not making booze with it. But the wife's iron says "distilled water only" on it. She dose a lot of ironing (joking, we don't have a still).
