I agree with others, it sounds like carpal tunnel. About 30 years ago, I had it in my left hand. My left hand and into my arm would go numb during the night. Even just leaning my left arm on the door armrest of a vehicle would bother me.
The operation was simple enough. I checked into the hospital about 8am, they did the operation at 9, and within an hour feeling was coming back in my hand and fingers. Checked out of the hospital about 1pm and went back to work the next day.
I never did have it in my right hand. But, I've heard injury or trauma can bring it on, also. When I was in Japan, I dumped a motorcycle and landed on a blacktop road with all of my weight on the palm of my left hand, so then may have triggered it.
