For the last couple of months my hands have been numb when I wake up in the morning. One time my whole arm had no feeling. After about an hour the feeling returns with some pain. I asked the VA doctor what was wrong and he said it was just a pinched nerve. Has anyone here had a problem like this and knows what causes it?
I need hands to work on tractors.

I,m no doctor maybe your sleeping with your wrists bent at nite I had trouble with my right arm and hand going numb had carpel tunnel surgery fixed me right up but if it,s both arms I,d go with the doc and think its a pinched nerve in the neck might have to see a back cracker just my opinion

It is carpel tunnel. DO NOT let it go. I left mine go for years and when I finally went in for the surgery Doc said He didn't think it would help as I waited to long. Had the surgery and he was right. Didn't help.

I'm almost positive it is carpal tunnel. I had it real bad about 17 years ago. It got so bad it would keep me up at night. I went in for surgery on a Friday for 1 hand and the pain was gone instantly. I made an appointment and had my other hand done the next week. My Dad made the mistake of letting it go to long and now at 83 he has hardly any feeling in his hands and struggles with everything like buttoning his shirts.Get it checked out. There is a easy test to diagnose it.

I had the same thing start happening in May and saw the Dr about it as well. I was sent to a specialist who stuck electrified needles in various spots to see the reaction of the nerves. Very strange seeing your hand move without you controlling it. In my case it ended up being pinched nerves and it took 6 months to get back to normal with a warning that it most likely will happen again the older I get.

when it happened to me; it was caused by statin drugs. the specialist claimed it couldn't be, but my GP said that he'd seen it multiple times. i got off the statins and my arms quit being numb!

Wife and I both have had that problem at times. It has always gone away for us, but will inevitably come back again.

From what you described, I would agree with your doctor, OR add this as another possibility: It "could" also be that you are laying on your hands while you sleep, with wrists bent sharply. This will restrict blood flow to your hands, and it'll hurt when full blood flow returns. I've had that happen to me as well, but I've noticed that it's almost always when I have recently strained my hands or wrists or arms, or even my shoulders.

Also, as the electrical impulses in our brains can change pathways without notice, your brain may be sending signals to your hands to curl inward while you sleep.

However, by far the most common issue seems to be a pinched nerve either in the neck or the spine. The pinching is often caused by bulged discs. ...Can't remember if a person can have herniated discs while feeling no pain, but that might be another possibility.

The long and short of it is, your doctor will no more than any of us here....'cept for anyone here who might be a doctor. ...I don't even play one on TV.

Hope you get it figured out. Can really make starting each day miserable!

Check to make certain you have a regular heart beat. I had trouble with my right arm going numb. Doctor diagnosed an irregular heart beat, atrial fibrillation. Treated with a pill to slow the heart rate plus a blood thinner. I've been going good for 25 years this way.

I agree with others, it sounds like carpal tunnel. About 30 years ago, I had it in my left hand. My left hand and into my arm would go numb during the night. Even just leaning my left arm on the door armrest of a vehicle would bother me.

The operation was simple enough. I checked into the hospital about 8am, they did the operation at 9, and within an hour feeling was coming back in my hand and fingers. Checked out of the hospital about 1pm and went back to work the next day.

I never did have it in my right hand. But, I've heard injury or trauma can bring it on, also. When I was in Japan, I dumped a motorcycle and landed on a blacktop road with all of my weight on the palm of my left hand, so then may have triggered it.

goose you was lucky when I had mine done it took 4 to 6 weeks to get strength back in it also needed to learn to wipe butt with other hand lol

I agree with wrist position,, and arm position when sleeping. My hands and arms will go to sleep, if I don't have my arms down at my sides.... of course that is a pinched nerve, somewhere.

I deal with a pinched nerve somewhere between my neck and shoulder blades on a regular basis. Sometimes triggered for no reason most often by sneezing. Was really bad in high school when I played football and would hit with my shoulder. Causes my right arm to basically go dead and tingling always in my fingers and sometimes up to my elbow. I go to the chiropractor a couple times a month and that seems to help. If nothing else reduces the duration of numbness. I?d like to see if there was some way to get it fixed but I usually only think of it when it happens.

I have the same problem in my left hand/arm. I tried a wrist splint at night and it did not help. The odd thing is it does not bother me during the day. I had carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand several years ago and it only took seven minutes. If you do have carpal tunnel find a hand surgeon that does the endoscopic method because of the recovery time. Dr told me I could use my hand the next day after surgery.

Thanks everyone for the reply. Sounds like it could be two problems. I knew there is a lot of wisdom on this site. Looks like I should go back to the va hospital. I hope I get a better doctor. Good luck to you guys too.

>m he said it was just a pinched nerve

How does a pinched nerve affect both hands? Get a different doctor ASAP.

Numbness in extremities can be caused by diabetes. I've never heard it affecting only hands and not feet, but if you've never had your hemoglobin A1C checked you probably should.

Could be something simple.
Any changes in pillows or mattress lately?

Had my right arm doing the same after we bought a new bed.
Too firm on the edge.
Now I sleep closer to the middle of the bed, problems went away.

My hands got to where I couldn't close them, hurt a lot, and were num like you are talking about, and all that. Swanson is my OTC vitamin supplier and I started using their Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM pills probably 10 years ago and my hands have been good as new for as long as I can remember. Read up on those contents. Made for just that. I'm down to a maintenance dose now just to keep what relief I obtained.
