The 10W isn't anything to worry about. It means that your 10W-40 oil will have the viscosity of 40 weight oil when it is warm out and will not get so thick when it gets cold, more like what a 10 weight oil would be like in cold weather. Your old tractor might have called for straight 40 weight because 10W-40 hadn't been invented yet when it was new. I run it in my tractors year around.
I run 15W-50 in my combine engine. It gives it a little more oil pressure when the engine is up to operating temperature and I have no intention of running it when it gets below zero. The 15W means it will be a little stiffer when it gets cold than if it was 10W.
