Oil Questions

I have a chance to get some new cases of oil. Different brands but all new cases and it is all 10W 40. My question is would 10W 40 oil work in the older tractors, or is the 10W too light for them. These would be tractors that don't see a lot of field work. The price is $20.00 for a case of 12 qts. Thanks - Bob

Gas engines?

You say old, how old...lot of older gas tractors that I'm familiar with called for a straight 30 weight, I run 5w30 in them. I do run 15w40 in the 8n, it helps with the oil pressure. Need to rebuild it, I'll put it on the list.

Probably be fine. But FWIW, if your close to one, Rural King sells their house brand (Harvest King) gas engine oil for $1.59, $6.99 for a 5qt jug, meets the latest specs per the bottle

Engine oil is the most important maintenance you do. I would not skimp on that. Using old oil that may or may not be the correct viscosity could be a mistake.

I prefer the 15w-40 diesel rated oil for my old Farmalls, but 10w-40 should be just fine. I wouldn't be afraid to use it.

The oil is not necessarily old, maybe up to 5 years, if that. A guy passed away and his brother is selling off his assets. I'm thinking of Late 1950's to Late 1960's tractors for the most part. Gas tractors.

10-30 or 10-40 will work just fine. If the oil pressure is getting a little tired 15-40 will give it a small boost but not much. The real oldies like the F20 might like a heavier oil though.

I have oil that is probably 15 or more years old. Never been opened, setting inside, out of the sun. I'm not afraid to use any of it when I need it.

I forgot to say that there is also several cases of Castrol 20w50 oil. Thoughts on that in the older tractors, or maybe newer (1965 - 1980) diesels? Thanks again

The 10W isn't anything to worry about. It means that your 10W-40 oil will have the viscosity of 40 weight oil when it is warm out and will not get so thick when it gets cold, more like what a 10 weight oil would be like in cold weather. Your old tractor might have called for straight 40 weight because 10W-40 hadn't been invented yet when it was new. I run it in my tractors year around.

I run 15W-50 in my combine engine. It gives it a little more oil pressure when the engine is up to operating temperature and I have no intention of running it when it gets below zero. The 15W means it will be a little stiffer when it gets cold than if it was 10W.

When Mobil has their rebate you can buy Delvac cheaper than that I think, 15-40, that's what many run in most older and newer tractor engines.

Read the responses and everyone skipped over it. Delo 15/40 is a diesel grade oil. Won't hurt anything but it is also a heavy duty oil meaning it has Zinc in it. Zinc keeps the flat tappet cams much happier than "Energy Conserving" oil. HD oil stays in place when the engine is shut off. EC drains away too quickly and a lot of dry starts.
HD oil does not need to be diesel rated, just have the Zinc in it. Zinc also is good for killing cat converters on newer cars. It just takes several years in my case. Your results may differ.

Correct. Zinc is GOOD for the OLD tractors, whether they are diesel or gas.

I remember seeing a test on all of the popular motor oils and how they copmared with one another as well as how they met the criteria for engine oils. The biggest surprise to those doing the test and to me. as well, was how high up in the ratings Walmart's house brand scored! It placed 2nd or 3rd best, as I recall. Just sayin'.
