A couple of years ago I cleaned all of the terminals on my trucks, tractors, jeep in the fall and for the first time ever sprayed them with that red terminal protector stuff I think made by permatex. Next summer I began having starting problems and on at least one of the trucks and the jeep were new batteries that I installed when I sprayed the red coating on the fall before. I took them apart, the red stuff was down between the terminals and the posts. Cleaned them off, put back together, no more problems. Now I'm back to cleaning the way that I always did, take apart and scrubbing with baking soda in water, put back together, done until the next time.
