I know the early 4400's had the condenser in the cab roof, using electric fans, is your condenser next to the engine radiator?
Is the dryer a vertical can, or is it mounted horizontally?
In either case, the liquefied refrigerant from the condenser enters the dryer port opposite the sightglass, passes through the desiccant media, enters either a vertical or an angled horizontal "dip tube" and exists the dryer past the sightglass, then flows to the expansion valve.
There should be a negligible temperature change across any A/C dryer.
Your dryer MAY be installed backwards, or partially plugged, or (if a horizontal dryer) rotated wrong on it's axis so the angled diptube isn't hanging down into the liquid refrigerant. The horizontal dryers have a decal or stamping showing their correct orientation.
Marking may be like the photos below, or a stamping on one of the ends.
