hey guys, on a 4400 combine air conditioner, the dryer, I want to make sure the filter is in the right direction, it was replaced in 2014 and I want to make sure it is in the right direction, I bought it last year and it only blows luke cool air. the arrow points to the cab.....the cab side line is cold and little sweat the radiatior side line is luke warm is this filter on correctly ???

If it is a liquid line filter, (the small line) yes, the flow is from the radiator (condenser) toward the cab.

If the large line coming from the cab (the evaporator) is sweaty cold, the AC is doing what it should.

Possibly there is a problem with air flow through the evaporator, a duct leak, outside of evaporator clogged blocking the air flow. If there is a heater, could be hot air mixing with the air conditioner air.

Is there a valve in the heater hose to stop hot water from circulating through the heater? If there is, and it is closed, the heater hoses should not be hot. If they are, the valve is not closing. If no valve, sometimes installing one will help.

I know the early 4400's had the condenser in the cab roof, using electric fans, is your condenser next to the engine radiator?

Is the dryer a vertical can, or is it mounted horizontally?

In either case, the liquefied refrigerant from the condenser enters the dryer port opposite the sightglass, passes through the desiccant media, enters either a vertical or an angled horizontal "dip tube" and exists the dryer past the sightglass, then flows to the expansion valve.

There should be a negligible temperature change across any A/C dryer.

Your dryer MAY be installed backwards, or partially plugged, or (if a horizontal dryer) rotated wrong on it's axis so the angled diptube isn't hanging down into the liquid refrigerant. The horizontal dryers have a decal or stamping showing their correct orientation.

Marking may be like the photos below, or a stamping on one of the ends.

Also...low refrigerant. If it has a "sight glass"...I assume it does...then you can tell when it is full. If not - find OEM spec on amount of refrigerant and use a digital scale to fill system. Follow the rest of these guys tips also...good luck.

Haven't worked on a 4400 in years but most JD dryers are not reversible due to the fitting configuration. If you have a noticable temp change through the dryer, The filter portion is restricted. It is acting like an expansion valve and dropping the pressure before it gets to the expansion valve, therefore poor cooling in the cab.

I agree with Cliff that the drier can not be installed backward do the way the lines are configured. As for charging till the bubbles are out of the sight glass that only works if you are using R-12, charging till a full sight glass with R 134a will overcharge it. Best to hook up gauges and let the pressures tell you what's going on.

thanks all ! the dryer was in the correct direction, I charged with 2 cans of 134 and all is COOL now ! there isn't a sight gauge on it but I used the one on the charger and its close now.

Most industrial units have a "high-volume" capacity....sounds more like 3-4 lbs...but again- check and see what the unit holds. Good job!
