There are two reasons for the starter to keep running or to fail to run. Running -- First: A starter relay (solenoid) that sticks in the start (connected) position can be the most likely reason. Second: The wiring to the starter relay, including the button, can be shorted to itself, or stuck in the "pushed" position. Some Ford starter relays used a ground to a grounded switch to engage. This could cause a short to ground to cause continuous cranking.
Not cranking at the starter can be caused by a open non operational starter, or non operational Relay. It could also be a broken wire to the push button that sometimes shorts to ground, and sometimes doesn't and is broken at the place where it touches the grounded component. Jim.
