Lots of parts come as an assy now for many reasons. 2 from my old truck that I had to buy more than once were the heater fan and fan belt. Yep, you can not buy just a fan belt for a Volvo truck, you get a fan belt assembly. The reason for that is that Volvo knows that it is the worn out tensioner that ruins the belt so selling just a belt won't do any good. So you get both in the box. The fan motor is the same, you cant buy just the motor, you get the motor, fan, and housing. This does make it easy to change as you just unplug it and slide it out. I once took the number off the motor and bought one online for $18 rather than the $150 the assy cost, but by the time I was done switching everything over I had so much time in it that buying the assy would have been cheaper.
For $300 I would just buy it and forget it. After all you did do it wrong and were mostly responsible for the lost part.
