bill what i can't figure out if they were patrolling the strait WTH were they out there for in the first place. i mean so dark they couldn't see their hand in front of their face, so they decided to go out in the middle channel and wait for something to come by that they couldn't see ?? it was well known that there was heavy enemy traffic in that strait my guess is they were out yukking it up and didn't hear that ship bearing down on them and yes sound travels easily on the water BTDT. common pratice for torpedo boats while waiting to ambush is to blend in with the back ground to disguise your silhouette, not waiting in the middle of the channel for the first destroyer to come along and slice you in half.
