Your dad was right. 8N is nowadays considered a hobby tractor. I use mine for brush hog duty, some light grading with a blade, and I had a loader on it before to move a bit of dirt. I guess one could plow a bit, maybe with a harrow in soft soil. But time and tide have passed them by. My JD 2010 will do every job better, easier, and faster. But - I still enjoy my time on the 8N. It's sooooo simple.
