JD, what was (is) it you don't like about the 3020? I am NOT a J.D. man, but I had one in my care for about a year for an old farmer friend. On the plus side, the thing steered like a dream, the remotes with the J.D. tips were the easiest to hook up of any tractor I ever tried. It didn't seem to burn any more gas than other tractors it's size and it had enough power for a six foot brush hog, a 4'x4' baler and a Haybine. The downers (besides being green) were the retarded shift pattern and the even more retarded hydraulic controls on the left side of the steering wheel. But none of that detracted from the reliability of the tractor, just took some getting used to. Thinking back, the transmission speeds might have been logically arranged if it had power shift. When the old man finally sold it, it went for 1500.00 . It was straight and clean, but it needed a head gasket and the load shaft was leaking. The hydraulic pump made this weird buzzing/rattling sound (loudly) and I kept waiting for it to blow, but it made all the hydraulic power you could want. Sorry for gushing about a John Deere... I was taken aback when you stated that they were to be avoided... and here I am wondering all these years later if I made a mistake by not buying it. I am interested in hearing your experiences with them.
