If it dies when you try to engage the clutch then it may be stuck in two gears. If it did not shift out of first when you put it into second it should have slid to a stop. It seems you said you successfully shifted to second and had the clutch re-engaged before the issue.
It will also not roll if stuck in two gears, which you said it would not do. If you broke some teeth on the pinion they may have become lodged under the ring gear, also preventing the tractor from rolling.
Shifting a tractor while moving can break gears if you don't know how to do it safely. Tractors like yours are designed to start in any gear, not 1st, then upshift although it is commonly done.
