: : Thank You : The JD D was designed to burn distillate to be more economical. You started the D on gasoline that was in the small tank at the back and then you switched it over to distillate. The line connecting to the block did suck water from there to be mixed with the distillate to add power and burn the distillate better.

Swede is right, it was called a water injector.
The D and GP both had them,although they were different parts. Water injection controlled detonation caused by burning lower grade fuels.
Most tractors are missing them today, but a total restoration should have one installed. I made complete D units a couple of years ago, functional as original. Also ran out out a couple of years ago,hehe. But do still have most parts for an injector you might need. ( needle,check,block fitting,line fittings and nuts,
injector body nut,etc.)

ps- I always shim them shut to where they do not operate. That way there is no danger of injecting antifreeze or of someone coming along and turning it on while you are eating lunch. Then you come back to and engine full of water!
