UP here there really is no such thing as "rent". The 3 local farmers that are here myself included don't really pay rent on any of the hay or pasture ground. I did put in a culvert and some gravel to get into a 70 acre field I'm "renting" though. If I didn't make hay on most of the ground I do it would just sit idle and revert to brush and trees eventually.
This year I'm "renting" a few hundred acres of hay ground and not paying a dime to the landowners, they all just "want to keep the fields cleared".
